Lane 3 appears spliced in, in the pRKIP blot of Figure 2B. It is a subtle splice though, i.e. the vertical changes in background are much clearer when brightness is reduced (-80%)...

I don't see it. Can you make the case clearer? You said "near vertical" that doesn't mean anything. We all know that sometime we may get some funny background in a western blot film...
