Gout was identified by the Egyptians in 2640 BC and later by Hippocrates in the 5th c. BC, who referred to it as 'the unwalkable disease'. Colchicine, from the autumn crocus, was first used to treat gout in the 6th c. AD. Gout tophi were 1st described by van Leeuwenhoek in 1679.
